Introduction

Sandra Ondraschek-Norris was born and grew up in the north of Ireland.
She now lives near Zurich, Switzerland.

For me painting (at least the kind of painting I’m currently interested in) is about having private conversations with places, Nature, the elements – or with the paint itself. There are snippets of dialogue with half-remembered landscapes (not just Ireland!); recurring interactions with familiar views (the lake and mountains from my bathroom window); more frivolous, flirtatious conversations with imagined worlds. So I’m constantly talking to Nature: sometimes it’s gentle and affectionate, sometimes it’s stormy and argumentative and Nature says ‘just shut up and listen’. There isn’t always a story to tell; an image doesn’t necessarily mean anything but there’s usually an atmosphere or a feeling that gets expressed.

Malerei heisst für mich (wenigstens die Malerei, für die ich mich momentan interessiere), persönliche Unterredungen mit Orten zu führen, mit der Natur, den Elementen – oder der Farbe selbst. Da sind Bruchstücke von Dialogen aus teilweise erinnerten Landschaften (nicht nur in Irland!), wiederkehrende Auseinandersetzungen mit mir bekannten Bildern (der See und die Berge von meinem Badezimmerfenster aus gesehen), weitere frivol-kokette Gespräche mit imaginierten Welten. So rede ich andauernd mit der Natur, manchmal sanftmütig und liebevoll, manchmal stürmisch und streitlustig; die Natur antwortet mir: „Sei einfach still und höre zu!“. Es gibt nicht immer eine Geschichte zu erzählen. Ein Bild muss nicht zwingend eine Bedeutung haben, dafür bringt es gewöhnlich eine Atmosphäre oder ein Gefühl hervor.
